In a break from convention, the Mercedes-Benz CLA, as the third Daimler model, shares the new front-wheel-drive technology with these two vehicles. On January 15, 2013, the CLA was unveiled as part of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, and production began ten days later at the Kecskemét facility in Hungary. Since mid-April 2013, the model has been offered throughout Europe. The Mercedes CLA's icy wind is particularly noteworthy; with a drag coefficient of 0.23, no other car in the world slides through the wind as well as the C117. Since its installation, the Mercedes-Benz CLA has been equipped with four different engines, each with four cylinders on the petrol side. These come in two performance levels, with the gallons of diesel being the only difference. The M270 DE 16 AL is the most vulnerable motorization; the 1.6-liter direct-injection turbocharged engine produces 90 kW and 200 Nm torque on the CLA 180, and 115 kW and 250 Nm torque on the CLA 200.

The M270 DE 20 AL is available in two versions: the CLA 250 with 155 kW and the CLA 45 AMG, the most potent and well-known AMG variation known from the new A-Class with 265 kW and the enormous torque of 450 Nm with normal all-wheel-drive. The CLA 200 CDI is powered by the OM651 DE 18 LA diesel engine, which produces 100 kW and has a 1.8-liter displacement. With its 2.2-liter movement, the more powerful OM651 DE 22 LA delivers 125 kW, comparable to the CLA 250's torque of 350 Nm. In terms of fuel consumption, all models have a range of four to six liters per 100 kilometers, and all variations meet the Euro 6 emission standard. A typical MacPherson spring in the front propels the CLA forward, and it has a developed four-link suspension in the back. The CLA 45 AMG comes standard with a lowered sports version of this stopper. Buyers of all other models must pay a few euros more for direct drive.

Daimler's dual-clutch transmission is offered as an automatic synchromesh with the more durable petrol and diesel models ex-works, but at a higher cost for the weaker counterparts. The vehicle comes standard with a new three-shaft manual transmission with six gears, which offers reduced drag torque and enhanced shifting comfort thanks to lowering changing forces. As one would expect from Mercedes-Benz, the Mercedes CLA scores highly in safety. The Attention Assist fatigue indicator, which was previously only available in higher-class cars, is now standard in the new class. If the claimed Collision Prevention Assist is turned on, it detects impending collisions at speeds of up to 200 km/h and initiates an emergency stop if the driver fails to respond in time. The radar-based technology informs the driver with visual and audio messages at low speeds.
